Why We Do It - Lapasadita BBQ Team

The Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo (aka Rodeo Austin) ranks as Central Texas’ largest youth education fundraiser and we’re proud to be part of that legacy. Over the last 20 years, Rodeo Austin has awarded over $20 million to over 13,500 students in 120 Texas counties. These scholarships are not limited to graduates interested solely in agricultural interests — there are no stipulations regarding planned major, etc. to limit the candidates.

As a team, La Pasadita has an additional reason to be so dedicated to our purpose. In 1996, we lost two of our team members in a tragic auto accident a week after the annual cook-off. The loss of Brent Benton and Chad McLaughlin was devastating. They were leading members of the team and Brent was often heard stating that “rodeo” was his favorite time of year. He loved “rodeo” and we loved him for it.

Their passing has fueled our determination that much more to raise scholarships in their names. To remind us of their dedication and so they can be with us at “rodeo,” their initials are emblazoned on our shirts, hats, bandanas and anything else that bears our logo.
